Disaster preparedness

After the Japanese tsunami our family started thinking about whether we could have a tsunami where we live. Our house is about 500m from the sea, and in Japan some of the tsunami waves reached 10km inland! footage showed small settlements similar to ours totally washed away.
there are three kinds of tsunami; distant, regional and local
In New Zealand, local and regional tsunami could be generated from earthquakes in Cook Strait, off Fiordland or off the east coast of the North Island and the Bay of Plenty. they say that if an earthquake is too strong to stand up in then you should get to higher ground. if we could drive we could get up the hills inland, otherwise we would have to scramble up the hills at the back through the bush, not easy!
