Disaster preparedness
After the Japanese tsunami our family started thinking about whether we could have a tsunami where we live. Our house is about 500m from the sea, and in Japan some of the tsunami waves reached 10km inland! footage showed small settlements similar to ours totally washed away.
there are three kinds of tsunami; distant, regional and local
In New Zealand, local and regional tsunami could be generated from earthquakes in Cook Strait, off Fiordland or off the east coast of the North Island and the Bay of Plenty. they say that if an earthquake is too strong to stand up in then you should get to higher ground. if we could drive we could get up the hills inland, otherwise we would have to scramble up the hills at the back through the bush, not easy!

Term 3 Reflection
Active Worlds, It was fun interacting with the others but it didn't really feel like I did much learning.
Creativity, lamp design was the thing I think I did the best It looked pretty good at the end.I started doing science booklets which are quite interesting.
Running the call of the wild live chat discussion was quite a fun challenge.
My Glog about rain forest deforestation turned out quite well.
I was a bit lazy about putting work on online though :c

enterprise
Business ideas
I would like to use my photography to base the business around.
I could try to sell greeting cards or maybe calendars but the problem is the printing as we don't have a working printer and then there's how to sell them? We could go door to door, try and get a shop in town to sell them or maybe sell them on trademe or something but for all of those you need to print copies. We will have to pay to have them printed and that might cost quite a bit.
I could also...use photoshop to make fantasy images, or fractal images for the card designs.
I could do some research like asking the photographer in town that makes his own cards (Stewart Nimmo) or ask Vidron greeting cards if they would use my photos for their cards or the photographer; Rob Suisted who's website is www.naturespic.com

Bird Watching
I've seen a lot of birds around at the moment and I've got a couple of pretty good photos to match so ill put on some of the good ones for you to see
today there were two Tuis calling to each other (I only saw one) and a Bellbird sadly I couldn't photograph them as they were behind branches and they were just silhouettes
yesterday I got some photos of a song thrush

there's lots of fantails around and they seem to like hanging around our damson tree they are good to photograph because you can get quite close but they do move very fast.

there was a couple of sparrows around a day or two ago which were quite funny

and lots of wax eyes which hang around the acacia trees which is just starting to flower so hopefully I'll get some photos soon
there's always blackbirds

down at the beach there's been paradise ducks

and a shag :) which sat up on the bridge with big trucks driving past but when we got close under the bridge it flew away :P

Term One Reflection
I am used to Blackboard now so I don't have any difficulty navigating around. but I did miss some of the tasks this term because I didn't find some work until nearly the end. Pdf files are annoying because you cant work in them. I am looking forward to the new version of blackboard we tested because it has good features like live chat which will be like virtual classroom, the work list is better than the learning tab, it seems more organised and easier to find the work. It also tells when there are comments and each thread is separate.
I enjoyed making the mechanism with a picture of a dragon even though I didn't finish it. figuring out the right mechanism and getting it to work was a challenge. When I made my crane I learnt by trial and error. I feel annoyed when something I do doesn't work so it is good to learn that.
here are some quotes about mistakes

The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing.
Mistakes are a fact of life. It is the response to error that counts.
The only person who never makes mistakes is the person who never does anything.
